Cloud Hosting: Hype Or Reality?

"Cloud" is a marketer's dream buzzword; they'll tag it to just about anything to get you to buy into it. Hosting companies in particular like to advertise cloud hosting; it seems to be a redundant, affordable, and scalable hosting alternative to traditional hosting solutions.


So is it?


In a word: yes. Cloud hosting can be a very economical solution to traditional hosting solutions, especially if your company plans to grow aggressively in the next few years. Using the cloud adds redundancy while still not being too expensive, and acts and functions just like any regular server you might employ while having the tools in place to scale easily and affordably.


As an example, we can look at Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud. Amazon's EC2 is a very affordable and scalable system for hosting your servers. Amazon's Cloud is priced per hour; you're billed only the amount of time you use the server. Let's assume that you use a Large Instance (virtual dual-core, 8 GB of RAM) 100% of the time with 2TB of data in and out. This will price to about $744 a month; an equivalent package from Rackspace, including bandwidth and hardware specs, costs $769 a month; you are saving $25 a month just by using Amazon.


The cost savings, however, aren't the only benefit to a cloud: cloud services are equipped with load balancers, automatic scaling, and other tools to help you scale easily. Many of these hosting solutions have scripts and automatic alerts to bring new instances online as you need them, or to allocate new virtual nodes as required. These measures are generally very easy to implement and save a great deal of planning and hassle; instead of looking ahead and requisitioning servers you may not end up needing, you don't waste any time or space on the rack. Additionally, you never have to use more than you need: instances or nodes can be turned off or on depending upon usage and need.


That said, however, cloud hosting is not a magical panacea or cure-all, and it is true that it's not 100% foolproof. The recent massive outage of Amazon's EC cluster in Virginia is evidence of this, as the failure created some latency and connectivity issues for several hours. The outage happened overnight and most systems were responsive and fully operational by morning, but it is a fact of computing that these sorts of downtimes happen. Cloud hosting can in theory be more resilient than regular hosting, but it is subject to outages just like the rest of the IT world and you can't ever guarantee 100% uptime.


In spite of this, however, I can't help but recommend cloud hosting. It's cheaper, amazingly scalable, and as reliable as many hosting companies out there; for those looking to switch up their hosting packages, I would encourage you to give cloud hosting an honest look and not just dismiss this one as a corporate buzzword!

What if Netflix could give people a choice by offering instant play options? This would give more choices as well as allow members different platforms to view movies and TV shows. They could then watch from their computers, smartphones, iPads, or TVs. The choice would be the members as to when and where they would watch.
Do you remember when the only way to see movies was in the movie theater?
There was no "I'll wait until it comes out on cable", much less DVD or instant play. If you missed it while it was in the theater, well...you missed it.

What do we say? Very simple! Open up your webpage, read the headline, read the first few paragraphs introducing yourself and then find a place where there's a cliffhanger and transition into telling people to continue reading the webpage.
That way you'll have your shocking statement, you'll begin telling the story but they have to keep reading the webpage to get that story. We want to limit our audio button to about one minute in length to avoid being too long and we want to read the exact text we see on the webpage because the whole point is to get them to start reading. It wouldn't make sense to show one thing in text and read something else in audio. Read what you see.

What Is a Podcast? Podcasting Terminology Explained


As you begin your career online or extend your outreach to a growing audience, you may be considering podcasting. This article discusses what podcasting is and explains some of the technology in terms that anyone can understand.


Several definitions for podcast are available by googling the term. The one I like best however, says the following. A podcast is a multimedia file able to be played on a computer, mobile device or media player. The file itself may consist of audio or video and is usually obtained by downloading it from a site (website) set up just for that purpose. Although the term podcast is sometimes associated with a popular vendor's device, the term podcast came before the device and has been in use according to Wikipedia since around 2005.


Other terms that are used when describing a podcast are terms such as "RSS", "podcast client", "aggregator", "blog", "syndication" and "digital audio files". Looking at the definition and use of these terms along with more descriptions of the use of podcast should help us to understand what the meaning of podcast is when it comes to using podcasts for broadcasting a message.


First, RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication, defined as a web feed technology that automatically detects when content on one site is updated and through subscriber feeds and aggregators, distributes it to another site or to a digital content player. A web feed allows feed readers to access a site automatically looking for new content and then post updates about that new content to another site. This provides a way for users to keep up with the latest and newest information posted on different sites. A feed reader is a software package that enables you to read the code in which RSS feeds are written. This can give you a central place to read updates from news feeds, blogs, email etc. Feed readers are increasingly being included in browser software, or as part of personalized homepages.


A podcast client is the software used to access and download podcasts. Podcast clients are also known as media aggregators, programs designed to automatically access an online file, or feed, and download the audio or video file associated with it. An aggregator (also known as a feed reader) is a website or software program that gathers and displays web content such as news headlines, blogs, and podcasts from multiple website sources to a single website (location). It uses RSS or other types of feeds to find the content, and allows subscribing to feeds, allowing new content to be automatically downloaded when it is available.


Blog is a shortened version of the word weblog, material published by the owner of a website containing posts of all sorts of content, including images, texts, video, audio and even links to other sites. Often a blog will allow participation from readers through comments or guest posts. Syndication is the pulling of content from an RSS news feed into a web site making information on a website available (usually in digest form) for a wide range of uses, like RSS feeds. Syndication also allows news updates, blog entries and podcasts to be made immediately available to a Web audience.


Finally, digital audio files for our purpose refers to a file containing digital audio which is defined as follows. Analog audio signals are converted into digital samples, with each sample being assigned a value in a range of 65,536 possible values (16 bits). This converted analog signal is saved in file format and is able to played by many digital audio players such as in a cd audio player or if converted to the right format an MP3 player, media players, etc.


Now, with these basics about the podcasting world, you have a foundation to start looking into how podcasting can become useful for your needs.
